per email from Jackie & Bob Dunn: "We can now confirm it as definitely in the Forum Baths, in the courtyard by entrance VII.5.10.
The column is numbered 34, and the staircases 35 and 36, on our Niccolini plan http://pompeiiinpictures.com/pompeiiinpictures/R7/7%2005%2024%20plan.htm (below).
It is not normally accessible as the courtyard is blocked off by a solid metal door, as are several adjacent entrances now used as part of the modern restaurant complex.
We have had our lunch several time in the restaurant next to the wall in the portico (7) unknowingly only inches away from the column.

"The description in Pompei: Pitture e Mosaici says:
The courtyard is accessible off Vicolo delle Terme.
On the left is the entrance to the praefurnium.
The ramped masonry staircase allows access to the roof of the caldarium.
The circular brick base had a column erected on it after the earthquake, probably to support a sundial.
See Carratelli, G. P. ed., 1990-2003. Pompei: Pitture e Mosaici. Vol. VII. Roma: Istituto della enciclopedia italiana, p. 172.

[Alternative sources, such as Niccolini, have suggested the column is a roof support.]

Looking at the plan and the DAIR photo would also confirm that your photo is reversed [corrected]."

per email from Jackie & Bob Dunn: "Forum Baths Courtyard (33) with column (34) and staircases (35) and (36)."
