per email from Martin Rush 17/03/2021: " HEIR 43699 - AHist: England: "209. York from S.E"

Both photographs [NB: see HEIR 74161] look towards the South Transept of York Minster, the site of the catastrophic fire of 9 July 1984 which was caused by a lightening strike (see the bottom photo, found on the internet, so not mine). Apparently the fire service deliberately collapsed the roof of the Transept with huge amounts of water to stop the fire spreading to the central tower and destroying the rest of the building. This was the Minster's most recent major fire of modern times : the 1829 fire was caused by arson, and the 1840 fire by a clock-repairer's carelessness with a candle.

HEIR 43699 seems to have been taken in the days of the horse and cart, and the format of the caption -- "209. York from S.E" -- may suggest that it formed part of a numbered but as-yet-unidentified set."
