{- per boarshill on HEIRtagger: "This is the east end of Guisborough priory church, left standing when the rest was destroyed in the Dissolution. Often spelled "Gisborough" (for example by English Heritage, who have care of the site). But the Priory lives on -- an outline of the arch is used as a symbol or logo by various local organisations - such as Guisborough Town Football Club -- and the site is used for popular events such as music festivals in summer.

Some tentative dating: (1) the unlikely-looking font in the centre of the arch was present in 1891 but had gone by 1955 (Frith Collection images). (2) The two stone coffins on the ground were on their sides facing us in 1891 and in 1955. But when I saw them last week, they were lying on their backs facing upwards."

email from boarshill: "Hello Janice
Many thanks for your encouraging email!

Photos from Guisborough 21 September 2016.
(The bus services in the North East are still surprisingly good, so I diverted on the way to Durham to Saltburn to have a look at HEIR 44307 Guisborough and its Priory) Augustinian foundation 1119AD by Robert de Brus; rebuilt 3 times and abolished 1540; material visible today dates from last rebuild eg east end of presbytery, some cloister, vaulted undercroft of cellarium, part of refectory and outer porch og gatehouse; areas yet to be excavated; site may have been preceeded by Anglo Saxon settlement (P.Day)

1: Overview : East end of Guisborough Priory, seen from the west.

"... 19th-century archaeologists found stone coffins during excavations. They are visible against the east wall, but their original location was not recorded."(Wikipedia http://wikishire.co.uk/w/index.php?title=Gisborough_Priory)

2: Focus on the two coffins - these were turned on their sides to face west in the HEIR photo, but are now lying flat on their backs.
Also the doorway on the south east side was bricked up in the HEIR photo - it has now been opened up.
(No idea when these changes happened - there have been various excavations over the years ...)

Next, Saltburn by the Sea (Hunt Cliff) ...
