Per email from Martin Rush 16/11/2021: "...the B[ritish] S[chool] at A[thens] SPHS, Knossos, and the Palace of Minos throne room, ca 1900.
(1)
Heir has at least six images of the throne/throne-room in the Palace of Minos:
41326 XH.a.258
41327 XH.a.259
41328 XH.a.262 (Myres number out of sequence?)
41329 XH.a.260
41330 XH.a.261
41331 XH.a.263
(2)
At least three of these images seem to be in the BSA SPHS collection ...
(3)
It seems to me that the six HEIR images could be arranged to tell the story of this part of the excavation:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
41326 - Instarch: Greece: Crete: "KNOSSOS: THRONE: EXC." "P. of M. IV fig. 881" "XH. a. 258"
Here we have four workmen clearing the floor area around the throne. They are equipped with tools, baskets, and all the paraphernalia of an ongoing excavation.
I assume P. of M stands for Palace of Minos?..."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
41328 - Instarch: Greece: Crete: Knossos: "THRONE-ROOM - ACTUAL STATE" "278." "XH. a. 262"
The workmen and their tools have gone for now, although small heaps of material still have to be dealt with. I think I can make out a suggestion of a palm tree on the wall east of the throne?
41328 is *very similar* to BSA SPHS 01/2033.5238, which can be found here: https://digital.bsa.ac.uk/results.php?collection=BSA+SPHS+Image+Collection&locality=minos&start=51&irn=143870. The shadows and incidental scattering of remains seem the same. I would suggest that HEIR 41328 might be a cropped version of the larger image in the BSA SPHS Image Collection. The following paragraph is from the SPHS page :
Date 1900 ... Date based on the first year of excavation at Knossos when Myres was present. Also prior to any reconstruction, the first phase done in 1901 (pers. comm. V. Fotou 2019). The photographer may have been J.L. Myres as it appears as negative number 5238 in the J.L. Myres negative register held by the archives at the Institute of Archaeology, Oxford University. Register reads: "Knossos: Throne-room fr. right front of throne 276". The number printed on the photograph and the same number (276) in the Myres negative register caption corresponds to numbers on photographs of Knossos in Evans archive in Oxford.
The number "276" is present in the bottom left corner of both the HEIR and the SPHS images.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
41331 - Instarch: Greece: Crete: "KNOSSOS: THRONE." "P. of M. IV fig. 889" "3892" "XH. a. 263"
A closer view of the throne after further tidying. The fresco to the east of the throne is much clearer now.
41331 is in BSA SPHS here: https://digital.bsa.ac.uk/results.php?locality-irn=725&irn=143817 reference BSA SPHS 01/1490.3892
The following paragraph is from its SPHS page :
"Date 1900 ..... Photograph dated to 1900 since the fresco fragment E. of the throne is still in place and the roof of the throne room was constructed later in 1901 (pers. comm. V. Fotou 2019). Number 575, crossed out, is written on the print may relate to numbers in the Evans archive in the Ashmolean, Oxford."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
41330 - Instarch: Greece: Crete: "THRONE-ROOM" "XH. a. 261"
- I think this image needs to be reversed L R.
[NB: This was done after receipt of this email. - JK]
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
41329 - Instarch: Greece: Crete: "THRONE-ROOM" "WA 14 EV KN 164" "XH. a. 260" Sir A. Evans on left
Almost finished. Evans is inspecting the site ...
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
41327 - Instarch: Greece: Crete: "KNOSSOS, THRONE ROOM" "XH. a. 259"
A longer view of the throne-room and throne, ready to receive visitors.
41327 is in BSA SPHS here with further information -- https://digital.bsa.ac.uk/results.php?locality-irn=725&irn=143805

Date 1900 ... Date based on the unroofed throne room. The citation to the first Knossos excavation report (BSA VI fig. 8) in the negative register caption does not show the same photograph. The photographer may have been J.L. Myres as it appears as negative number 3815 in the J.L. Myres negative register held by the archives at the Institute of Archaeology, Oxford University. Register reads: "Throne Room from Ante Chamber (MR 1901 p. 123 fig. 5; BSA VI fig. 8)". The number printed on the photograph (173) which also appears in the Myres negative register caption corresponds to numbers on photographs of Knossos in Evans' archive in Oxford....
